The “angry bird” Daniela Ryf started her 2017 season at the IRONMAN 70.3 race in Dubai, roughly 3 months after her phenomenal world champion title defense at the IRONMAN Hawaii.
The first race of the season is always something special. How is my current fitness level? Did all the base miles in November & December work out? What about the competitors and their shape? Questions over questions – also for a world-class athlete like Daniela Ryf. Here is how she experienced her racing start of the 2017 season.
“My winter training this year has been quite good, I would say. After Kona in October I took some rest and recovered before starting again in the middle of November. The race in Dubai was quite early, but I knew that with some key training sessions in December I could be at the start line in a competitive shape.
The swim was at a quite steady pace, as it’s often the case in 70.3 races. I tried to follow Lucy Charles, but she was way too strong today, so I concentrated on my own pace and stayed in small group with Catriona Morrison and Ellie Salthouse.
On the first kilometer of the bike course I was really excited and curious about the first racing-test of my new DT Swiss wheels. The good feelings from previous training rides I did on the new wheels confirmed and I quickly found a good rhythm on the bike. Constantly pacing myself and staying together with Catriona and Ellie for most of the ride, I took over the lead with 40km left and pushed a bit harder in the last hour of the ride.
The run then was really demanding and I had to fight hard during the last kilometers. As I had some minor issues within the last weeks before the race, I had to rack my body more than I’d liked to! I think there is still a lot more potential for the upcoming races. In the end I am super happy about this positive start into the new season and the first victory in the Triple-Crown series.
Now it’s time to further build up my strength and fitness towards the highlights of the season. I will enjoy being at home in Switzerland for most of February before heading down south to another training camp and some more miles on the bike.”
